IRONMAN
IRONMAN tested whether the early administration of intravenous iron in critically ill patients with anaemia reduces allogeneic red blood cell transfusion during hospital stay.
LEOPARDS
LeoPARDs tested whether levosimendan, in comparison with placebo, reduces the severity of organ dysfunction in adults with sepsis.
VANISH
The VANISH trial compared the effects of early vasopressin with noradrenaline on kidney failure in patients with septic shock.
CLASSIC
The CLASSIC trial investigated the effects of restricting volumes of resuscitation fluid in adults with septic shock after initial management.

Dr Dominic Trainor
After completing an intercalated degree in Medical Genetics, Dominic graduated with honours from The Queen’s University of Belfast in 2002. He undertook a Fellowship at The Alfred Hospital, Melbourne, from 2013-2014, where he was awarded "Registrar of the Year". Special interests include end of life care and focused intensive care echocardiography. He is currently clinical lead for organ donation in The Royal Victoria Hospital, Belfast.

Dr Chris Gowers
Chris Gowers is a Consultant in ICM and Anaesthesia in the Ulster Hospital, Belfast. He qualifed from Nottingham University in 1997 and trained in Engand, Australia and Northern Ireland. He is currently the hospital’s FICM tutor and has interests in teaching, cycling and end-of-life care.

Dr Peter McGuigan
Peter McGuigan is a consultant in ICM & anaesthesia in the Royal Victoria Hospital, Belfast. He attended Queen’s University Belfast and trained in Northern Ireland. He subsequently undertook a fellowship in the Royal Melbourne Hospital, Australia where he developed an interest in clinical governance. His main clinical interests are in post cardiac arrest care and anaesthesia for head and neck surgery.

Dr Chris Nutt
Chris is an intensivist & anaesthetist in the Royal Victoria Hospital, Belfast. He graduated from Queen’s University Belfast in 2001 and began training in Anaesthesia and Intensive Care in 2003. He has a strong research interest, publishing on pre operative risk assessment & has collaborated on several major international trials.

Dr Rob Mac Sweeney
Rob is an intensivist in the Regional Intensive Care Unit at the Royal Victoria Hospital, Belfast. He attended medical school at University College Dublin, undertook a PhD at Queen’s University Belfast and completed his anaesthetic and ICM training in Northern Ireland. He started Critical Care Reviews in 2009.
