Newsletter 147 / September 28th 2014
Welcome to the 147th Critical Care Reviews Newsletter, bringing you the best critical care research published in the past week, plus a wide range of free full text review articles, guidelines, commentaries, editorials, study critiques, correspondence and case reports from hundreds of clinical and scientific journals. This week's highlights are a paper from the New England Journal of Medicine, predicting the future course of the Ebola outbreak in West Africa, an AHA/ACA guideline on the management of NSTEMI, a paper from Paul Marik, in Current Anesthesiology Reports, on the physiology of fluid resucitation, and the statistical plan for the SPLIT study, comparing plasmalyte 148 with 0.9% saline in the critically ill.
The Topic of the Week is Goal-Directed Therapy, starting with a pre 2014 paper on EGDT in sepsis from Emanuel Rivers in tomorrow's Paper of the Day.
Upcoming Meetings
Critical Care Reviews Meeting 2015
It's now less than 20 weeks until the 2015 Critical Care Reviews Meeting, being held in association with the Northern Ireland Intensive Care Society. This not-for-profit event will be held on Friday January 23rd, at the Galgorm Resort and Spa, outside Belfast, Northern Ireland. The theme for the meeting is research translation, asking whether the results of recent major randomized controlled trials should be implemented into clinical practice. To facilitate this, the Chief Investigators for some of the biggest studies of the past year will be discussing their findings.
Niklas Nielsen will review one of the "hottest" studies in the past decade - TTM; in the year of the early goal-directed sepsis studies, Kathy Rowan will discuss her soon-to-publish studies, the UK ProMISe trial (the 3rd of the EGDT studies of the year), as well as CALORIES, a massive enteral versus parenteral nutrition study. Following on from SAILS, Danny McAuley will discuss his soon-to-publish HARP-2 study (statins in ARDS). This makes the meeting one of the most topical events you could attend. In addition, Eddy Fan, Medical Director of the ECMO service at Toronto General, will participate in a perioperative session, where he will be joined by Eamon McCoy, inventor of the McCoy laryngoscope, and Clifford Deutschmann, Past President of the Society of Critical Care Medicine. John Hinds, of cricolol fame, will be on hand to review some new evidence and distill his unique wisdom.
If you're a drive or short flight away, it would be great to have you come along. Travel on Thursday, attend the meeting on Friday and see some of the local landmarks over the weekend, before returning home on Sunday evening after a great winter break. On Saturday visit the North Coast: the World Heritage site Giants Causeway, Carrick-a-Rede rope bridge, Dunluce Castle and Bushmills Distillary, the oldest distillary in the world; while on Sunday experience Belfast: the new acclaimed Titanic Centre followed by a famous black taxi tour describing the troubled past of one of Europe's now most vibrant cities. The Galgorm Resort and Spa is one of Northern Ireland's premier hotels and is a 30 minute drive from Belfast International Airport. Please feel free to contact me if you're thinking about making the trip - it would be great to hear from you. Online registration opens next Sunday night.
SMACC Chicago
There is some fantastic news emanating from Australia, with the programme for SMACC Chicago (June 23rd to 26th) soon to be released and registration due to open in the next few weeks. This is rapidly becoming the premier critical care conference in the world, attracting major academics, high functioning clinicians, and social media experts from across the globe. If you go to just one conference this year, this is the one to choose. It's scientific, challenging, yet fun and friendly. It's also not-for-profit, consistent with the altruistic ethos of the FOAMed community, which is becoming increasingly more popular and influential. It's a conference like no other. Further details will be out soon on the SMACC website.
Critical Care Horizons
Critical Care Horizons is a fresh new voice in the critical care literature, offering thought-provoking, cutting-edge commentary and opinion papers, plus state-of-the-art review articles. The journal is free to publish with and free to read, opening authorship opportunity to all. The energetic editorial board consists of a deliberate mix of clinicians active in social media and world renowned academics, all driven by a desire to improve the care we offer our patients, and operate without financial gain or incentive. A call for papers has been issued, so if you have something interesting to say, and can say it in an engaging manner, please get in touch. We also need peer reviewers. The first issue will be released on January 1st 2015.
COI - I am the editor-in-chief of this new journal, but work in a voluntary capacity, as do all the editors.
